Ghana Internet Governance Forum starts tomorrow

To promote awareness and understanding of internet governance issues, the Ghana Internet Governance Forum (Ghana IGF) is set to take place on September 4-5, 2024, at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, Accra.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Sustainable Development for Our Digital Future,” highlights the critical role of digitalization in driving sustainable growth and development across Ghana.

Addressing the media, Executive Director of Ghana Domain Name Registry, Nana Kofi Asafu- Aidoo, stated that the Ghana IGF is a collaborative effort of the steering committee.

He said it will bring together stakeholders from government agencies, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector to share experiences and shape strategies for an inclusive digital future.

The event will feature discussions on critical issues such as fostering global digital equity, addressing disinformation and misinformation, and internet shutdowns in the context of political elections.

In addition, the Ghana Youth IGF will take place on September 4, 2024, providing a platform for young people to engage in internet governance discussions.

The main Ghana IGF will follow on September 5, 2024, with a focus on empowering sustainable development for a digital future.

On his part, President of ISOC Ghana, Francis Acquah Amaning touched on the Internet Governance Training for the Judiciary in Ghana, themed “Justice in a Connected World: Navigating the Digital Landscape in Ghana.

It aims to enhance the judiciary’s capacity in internet governance, ensuring they are well-equipped to address complex legal issues arising from the internet.

By fostering a deeper understanding of internet governance, the Ghana IGF and related initiatives aim to promote a safer, more inclusive, and equitable online environment for all.

The Ghana Internet IGF Steering Committee has announced the 2023 Internet Governance School Fellows

Today, on May 30, 2023, The Ghana Internet Governance Forum (IGF) made an exciting announcement regarding the selection of 33 individuals as Fellows for the 2023 Ghana Internet Governance School (GIGS) program. The chosen Fellows represent participants from a wide range of stakeholder groups, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity.

The primary objective of The Ghana Internet Governance School (GIGS) is to provide a platform for individuals from various sectors and backgrounds to acquire essential skills and knowledge in order to actively engage in internet governance discussions at the community, national, regional, and international levels.

By fostering the development of these skills, The Ghana Internet Governance School (GIGS) aims to empower its participants to make meaningful contributions to internet governance discourse in their respective spheres of influence. This comprehensive program equips Fellows with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of internet governance, fostering their ability to address emerging challenges and opportunities in the digital landscape.

The Ghana Internet Governance Forum (IGF) recognizes the importance of diverse perspectives and inclusiveness in shaping the future of the Internet. Through initiatives such as the Ghana Internet Governance School (GIGS), competent and capable individuals who can actively participate in the Internet governance debate and develop policies and practices that ultimately benefit Ghana and the broader global digital community. We are building a community of knowledgeable individuals.

GHANA INTERNET GOVERNANCE FORUM 2023 CALL FOR ISSUES.

The Ghana Internet Governance Forum calls all stakeholders in the Internet Governance Community to shape the theme and discussions for the 2023 Ghana IGF by highlighting pertinent issues affecting the country. Kindly note that this is a call for issues and not a call for sessions or workshop proposals.

In order to structure submissions, there are a number of proposed categories to which you may attribute your issue. If you think your suggestion does not fit into one of the categories, kindly propose a new one.

Ghana to host West African Internet Governance Forum 2022

The Ghana Domain Name Registry (GDNR) of the Ministry of Communications in partnership with Internet Society (ISOC), Ghana Chapter, will host the West African Internet Governance Forum in Ghana after a two-year virtual event.

This event is organized in collaboration with the West African Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) Steering Committee.

The theme for the 2022 edition, ‘Digital Sustainability: Data Innovation for post COVID recovery’, seeks to promote Internet Governance issues in West Africa through a multi-stakeholder process.

The two-day event scheduled from Thursday 26th May to Friday 27th  May 2022, will be held at the Airport View Hotel in Accra.

Speaking in an interview, NRI Coordinator for West Africa Internet Governance Forum, Madam Mary Uduma, called for more internet stakeholders’ involvement in the WA IGF processes as “internet governance is the development and application by governments, the private sector, and civil society, in their respective roles, of shared principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures, and programs that shape the evolution and use of the Internet.”

The event complements current subregional efforts in the digital transformation in West Africa; therefore, it will tackle key issues such as Economic Recovery in West African countries: Prioritizing Data Privacy and Security and Freedom of expression online, the impact of the fight against disinformation within the subregion, digital economy policies, regulations and, multi-stakeholder issues amongst others.

Therefore, this will explore the challenges and opportunities for enhancing its digital economy in a world of information, communication, and technology.
